Consolidating multiple health communication channels into a single, unified network for greater operational efficiencies across state healthcare system.
Melbourne, 23 July 2025 – Baret Technologies, an Australian healthcare communication technology provider, today announced a multi-year strategic partnership with the Western Australia Department of Health to deliver a state-wide role-based messaging solution. The collaboration aims to streamline healthcare communications, improve patient care coordination and deliver operational efficiencies for health service providers and organisational units at a state level.
The solution, Baret, enables secure, closed-loop communications between clinical and frontline workers, and leverages Microsoft Teams – a secure, enterprise-grade platform – as its underlying technology.
Initially, Baret will be implemented to support the System Flow Centre, part of the recently launched State Health Operations Centre (SHOC) – a multi-agency, state-of-the-art operations hub for WA’s key health emergency services. The System Flow Centre team monitors emergency department (ED) activity, movement of patients, and emergency transport demand to provide a coordinated response to system pressures.
“Effective communication is crucial for health systems to operate smoothly and with maximum efficiency,” said Dr Sumit Sinha-Roy, Principal Medical Advisor at SHOC. “Baret will assist our System Flow Centre team in providing a single communication modality to assist with coordinating care and reducing the communication noise that all patient flow roles need to deal with to better ensure that patients get the right care when they need it.”
After initial deployment, Western Australia Health aims to use Baret to consolidate previously fragmented health communication channels into a single, unified network across SHOC, WA health service providers, and agencies such as St John Ambulance WA. “Instead of relying on multiple pagers, text messages and phone calls, our teams will be able to use one streamlined communication network. Not only will this help to improve the quality of patient care but also operational effectiveness and state-wide collaboration,” said Dr Sinha-Roy.
According to Jane Prowse, Chief Technology Officer at Baret, one of the features that sets the platform apart is its unique ‘closed loop’ communication system. “By ensuring that messages are tracked from send, to delivery, and acknowledgement, Baret significantly improves communication reliability and response times in a way that has not previously been possible with systems such as pagers.”
“Our platform has been designed to empower healthcare professionals by providing role-specific, secure messaging capabilities across multiple healthcare agencies. Ultimately, this will help support more coordinated and timely patient care.”
As healthcare providers continue to embrace digital transformation, Dr Simon Kos, Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft Australia New Zealand, highlighted how secure, role-based communication innovations can benefit both patients and clinicians. “Clear communication is essential for great patient care, and technology is helping make that easier for clinicians. With secure, role-based communication, healthcare teams can stay connected and collaborate more effectively, leading to better outcomes for patients and experiences for clinicians.”
Launched in October 2021, Baret was initially developed in a partnership with FiveP – a Melbourne-based software and services provider – and Austin Health, tapping into direct expertise from frontline healthcare workers. The platform is now extensively used at Austin Health and across five of Monash Health’s hospitals in Victoria. Baret clients also include Mercy Health, Bendigo Health, and several other health institutes and aged care providers across Australia. In early 2024, Baret split out from FiveP as a standalone business to pursue further product-led growth opportunities within Australia and launch internationally into other markets and industry verticals.
Baret Chief Executive Matt Krosch emphasised that the partnership with the Western Australia Department of Health highlights the company’s dedication to developing technology that equips healthcare providers with the right tools to deliver care effectively and efficiently. “Health will always be at our core. We are committed to transforming healthcare communications and supporting healthcare providers in delivering quality care.”
“The implementation of Baret will enable WA Health employees to quickly disseminate critical information during routine operations and urgent healthcare events, enhancing response coordination and decision-making across their entire healthcare system.”
